Ever heard of the expression “I am just your pawn”? It is usually used when a person is being manipulated and in the event, being sacrificed for the good of the other. Well, the pawn basically moves the same way in chess. It is the foot soldier that is on the start of the battle field. If you want to learn to play chess, this is the piece you start off with.The pawn moves differently on how it captures. When it moves towards the enemy’s line for the first time, it can move one square or two squares forward. If it has already moved, from here on, it can only move forward one square at a time. *It is sort of like a foot soldier that has limited movement capabilities.

In terms of capturing, the pawn move one square diagonally either to the left or to the right, whichever piece your pawn wants to capture. Again, the pawn can only go to as much as capturing one square diagonally, like a foot soldier with a relatively short sword or a soldier that has a short ranged bow.

If a pawn reaches the end of the enemy’s board, then this pawn can become whatever rank he wants to be. It’s like a soldier being promoted to a higher rank for being an effective soldier. The pawn can be a rook, a bishop, a knight or even a queen. It cannot choose to be a pawn again (why would anyone do that?) or a king.

A pawn cannot move one space back like other pieces but it can move “en passant,” which is in response to the two-square-move now being implemented for pawns.

Learn to Play Chess: the Rook and Bishop

If you want to learn to play chess, you should know how to use the rook and the bishop.

The Rook

This is also called as the “castle” in some countries because it basically looks like a castle tower. This piece moves the way it captures, unlike the very humble pawn. It moves horizontally and vertically and it can travel from one end of the board to another, thus it does not depend how many squares it crosses so long as there are no obstacles blocking it. If there is a piece blocking its way to a capture, the rook, unlike the knight, cannot jump over the piece. A rule of thumb that can help you remember is that the rook’s movement and capture path is like a “T” shape except when it touches the edges of a board. There are two rooks per color.

The Bishop

There are two bishops per color (four in the entire game). One bishop is for the dark squares and one bishop is for the light squares. If the rook moves in a horizontal/ vertical way, the bishop moves and captures in a diagonal way. It can also move from one end to the other end of the board so long as no piece is blocking it because it cannot jump over pieces.

Because bishops only move diagonally, if the bishop started out as a dark square bishop, it only sticks to that color; no way it can cross over to the light squares.

My mother never took a photo that did not have subjects with bright red eyes or a plant growing from out of someone’s head. It must be genetic because I started out that way. Mother’s pictures were always taken from too far away. She was the only one I know of that could get a point and shoot out of focus.Over time, I discovered Adobe Photoshop. Redeye is the reflection of light off the blood vessels in the back of the eye. When taking a picture, you can reduce it by using the redeye reduction feature (3 rapid flashes and a full flash). With software, it is a matter of a couple of clicks ot the mouse and it is gone. Most photo correction software has filters to despeckle, sharpen, erase unwanted items in a picture. You can eliminate an old flame from a picture, if you like. My favorite picture of my wife, dressed to the nines, has an ironing board in it. Using Photoshop, I removed the ironing board and now I have a great picture.

Adobe has some really great photo and video editing software for use with your cheap digital camcorder. Some of it is quite expensive but they have two pieces of software called Photoshop Elements nad Premiere Elements/ Premiere Elements is video editing software. Antique Grandfather Clocks

The tall standalone clocks we call antique grandfather clocks have been helping humans keep track of time through the ages. In addition, people using everything from hourglasses to sundials also tracked time. During the second half of the 13th century, the very first mechanical clocks were developed. These early clocks were huge contraptions made with heavy iron frames and large gears, and were usually placed in church towers and striking the bell on the top of each hour. In addition there were town criers calling out the time. Later advances led to an hour hand, and the ability of the clocks to strike every quarter-hour. Eventually, during the first half of the 15th century, personal clocks, those we call antique clocks started to appear.

The Grandfather Clock Gets A Boost From Astronomers

In 1582 Galileo Galilei discovered you could use a pendulum to keep time. He studied pendulum clocks, and drew what became the first designs for a grandfather clock. In 1656 Christiaan Huygens applied what Galileo had discovered and developed the first pendulum clock, the prototype for the grandfather clock. These clocks hung on walls and were affectionately entitled “wags-on-the-wall” due to their short pendulums.

Grandfather Clocks Get Taller

The first grandfather clocks did not keep time well. An early grandfather clock could lose as much as ten minutes a day. In 1670 William Clement found by making the pendulum in a clock longer he could make the clock keep better time. The advancements resulted in an increase in precision that meant the clocks held time to within a few seconds variance per week. This was the start of the popularity of long case clocks, later renamed grandfather clocks, due to their ability to keep time so accurately.

Final Improvements To Grandfather Clocks

In 1721 George Graham noticed that temperature changes in the pendulum of a grandfather clock could cause it run slower or faster. Graham improved the grandfather clock design by compensating for the temperature changes in the pendulums. His changes led to grandfather clocks that were accurate to 1 second a day. Current antique grandfather clocks were created by this and similar designs.

In today’s world, the antique grandfather clock occupies a place pf prominence where it is generally viewed as soon as a visitor steps into the foyer. These antiques add top the charm and elegance of a home.

Hydroponics (from the Greek words hydro (water) and ponos (labour) is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, without soil. Most people who are new to hydroponic gardening, assume that plants are always grown in water. That is certainly one way, but there are many other choices for media. Hydroponics is really just soil-less plant growing, with some other substance providing the support and nutrients fed in other ways than through earth. One of the most obvious decisions hydroponicists have to make is which medium they should use. Different media are appropriate for different growing techniques.

ROCKWOOL

Rock wool (mineral wool) is probably the most widely used medium in hydroponics. It’s a type of basalt that is specially processed to provide a strong, porous base. It’s mostly inert, so it won’t decay or leach compounds into the water. It provides good drainage; it’s lightweight and inexpensive. Despite its lightweight and porous nature, rockwool provides a very sturdy medium for growing plants. It gives good support to developing roots. At the same time it helps regulate the water temperature by being a good heat conductor. Adding rockwool will alter the pH of the environment slightly at first, but this is easily controlled using a pH kit. Though rockwool has many advantages for a hydroponic gardener, most everyone will want to experiment with different media at some time. There are many more options available.

SAND

Ordinary beach sand is one common medium. It drains well compared to ordinary clay-infused soil, but in a hydroponic setting it doesn’t do as well as most other possible media. But it’s extremely easy to use and certain plants take to living in sand very well.

GRAVEL

Ordinary aquarium gravel is used in some settings. It provides a strong, clean supporting medium that can also be attractive. Gravel is inexpensive, easy to keep clean, drains well and won’t become waterlogged. However, it is also heavy, and if the system doesn’t provide continuous water, the plant roots may dry out.

PERLITE

Perlite is a volcanic rock that has been superheated into very lightweight expanded glass pebbles. It’s desirable for its ability to retain air. Since hydroponically grown plants will quickly deplete any dissolved oxygen, perlite will help the pump keep the water oxygenated.

VERMICULITE

Like perlite, vermiculite is another mineral that has been superheated until it has expanded into light pebbles. It draws in water from passive systems by capillary action, helping automate the watering and nutrient feeding tasks. Since it holds even more water than perlite, it may exclude air so it needs to be used in moderation. A mixture of perlite and vermiculite is often used for that reason.

COIR

Coco peat, also known as coir or coco, is the leftover material after the fibers have been removed from the outermost shell (bolster) of the coconut. Coir is a 100% natural grow and flowering medium.

Whether or not your still stuck in the Brett Farve’s Packers era you have probably figured out that Aaron Rodgers is Green Bay’s Quarterback of the future. After transferring from Butte Community College to California, Rodgers had three years left of eligibility and became the starting quarterback just five games into the season. He led the golden bears to an 8-6 record. It including a huge upset of the then number three ranked University of Southern California. He also had an important win against the Virginia Tech Hokies at the insight bowl.

As a junior he posted godly numbers that led his team to a number four ranking. The bears only lost one game that season with Rodgers starting at quarterback. In that game versus So-Cal Rodgers tied a NCAA record with 23 straight completed passes. He posted over 2,300 passing that year and threw for 23 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.

Rodgers was projected to be an early first round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft but miraculously wasn’t picked until the Green Bay Packers selected him with the number 24th pick in the first round. Rodgers has spent his rookie season behind a struggling Brett Farve and Packers Team that finished a terrible four and twelve. In his sophomore season as Farve’s backup. He suffered a broken foot in a 35-0 win over the New England Patriots.

He shined bright when Farve went down in the second quarter against the Dallas Cowboys in 2007, Rodgers third year in the league. Rodgers then threw for over 200 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.* He now has led the Packers to a good start in the 2008 season still without an interception.
